I’ve just been wandering round the discovery engine sites. StumbleUpon, Digg, Reddit – that sort of thing. It is a new term to me too, but they are a kind of filter to web articles you might be interested in. Like this one.

In order to focus your selections they offer categories which people can put interesting articles (like this one) in.

And you will find gardening but never gardens. A bit odd. All that activity but no result. Nothing that anyone might be interested in going to visit. As if there was only novel writing but never a novel, or painting but never a picture or anywhere to see one.

It sums up the place of gardens in our culture, sadly. When you think what they can offer – an immersion in beauty, sight, sound, light, weather, texture and feeling – you might think they would be wonderful places and destinations for visits from all those interested in art and culture and sheer pleasure. But there we are, in our little plant obsessed ghetto, cut off from the world, gardening.
